Airport managers today announced their intention to submit a planning application to develop Sheffield City Airport to become a heliport enhanced to enable general aviation to continue. The name is to be changed to Sheffield City Airport and Heliport to reflect the changes and the new focus of business now being built successfully at the site. Airport Director, David Ryall, has outlined plans seeking to develop a heliport that would focus on the current operations conducted by six based operators and open the way for commercial helicopter services from Sheffield to other northern cities or airports in the future. Mr Ryall indicated that work was underway to develop commercial helicopter services that could offer a connection with Manchester in less than 20 minutes and Liverpool John Lennon Airport in less than half an hour. Plans to develop the current airport site to deliver this exciting aviation opportunity and development of a mixed use business park, to be known as Blue Skies Business Park, have been shared with Sheffield City Council and business community alike. More detail about the ‘Blue Skies Business Park’ are expected next week. Nigel Tomlinson, Chief Executive of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry said: “I am very encouraged by the prospect of helicopter connections from Sheffield. For Sheffield to be linked to major international airports would be a godsend”. The schedule airline business at Sheffield never recovered from the fall away of services in 2002 despite a considerable financial commitment by the airport owners. Mr Ryall commented that the runway length has always been a constraint and that the rise of the low-cost carrier using aircraft types that were too large to land at Sheffield had sealed the airport's fate. However, he believed the opening of Doncaster Finningley Airport in Spring 2005 would allow Sheffield City Airport to act in a complimentary way offering a high quality aerodrome to serve the business and general aviation community. John Mothersole, Executive Director, Sheffield City Council – Development, Environment and Leisure stated: “We commend Sheffield City Airport for growing the business so spectacularly in the face of what we all know is an incredibly difficult market. Clearly, scheduled commercial flights have gone, but we are very supportive of the new niche that has opened up around leisure and business aviation. “Notwithstanding all the future permissions that need to be acquired, we are working closely with the airport and pushing them hard to ensure that helicopter services are put into place, that will prove to be an asset to businesses in Sheffield”. The airport is owned jointly by Sheffield Business Park and Peel Airports Limited. Sandy Smith, SBP MD, added that the mixed use site, a £90 million development which will create over 2,300 jobs, presented very exciting opportunities which, combined with other sites on the Parkway and Waverley, would result in a Business Park without peer in the UK. | ||
